* Improved vehicle aerodynamics have decreased wind resistance and made the vehicles more "slippery."* Down-sized engines have reduced engine braking by compression.* Higher speed rear axle ratios have reduced mechanical retardation.* Radial tires have reduced rolling resistance.* The movement toward smaller wheels and low profile tires require the smaller brake to absorb the same amount of energy as the standard 16-1/2 x 7-in, brake of today.It is no wonder that brake specifications have assumed such a predominate role when purchasing equipment. Fortunately, for truck fleets and the motoring public alike, government is playing a major role in demanding certain brake performance standards on new vehicles.How do all of these government standards help the truck fleet manager when specifying air brake systems? Actually, the standards assume the major responsibilities for proper braking of new vehicles. However, the fleet manager still has certain obligations: The hydraulic systems on the D-Series machines are variable flow, load- sensing, closed center systems that provide flow for all cutting edges at all engine speeds. The pump on the 416D is an axial piston unit that provides a flow of 37 gpm at 2200 rpm. System pressure is set at 3000 psi. The pump used on the 420D and 430D is also a variable flow, axial piston unit with a flow of 43 gpm at 2200 rpm. The system pressure is set at 3300 psi. The hydraulic pumps for the D-Series machines are driven off a transmission-mounted PTO. Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press. The Slugger Air Force pneumatic drill, at 24 lbs, 6 1/4" high, is useful for confined area drilling. The drill''s features include a permanent magnet that turns on or off by air power, a cutter capacity of up to 1 1/16" diameter x 3/4" depth and the ability to use ShortSlugger cutters and frame cutters. These cutters'' geometry allows the operator to drill multi-layered truck frames in a single pass.
