The increase of one horsepower over the GC160 and GCVl60, to 6.0 horsepower and 6.5 horsepower for the GC190 and GCV190 respectively, was achieved through an increase of displacement from 160 to 187 cc. This also results in a 0.5 lb.ft. torque increase for both engines, with the GC190 delivering 8.9 lb.ft., and the GCVI90 delivering 8.1 lb.ft.To maintain reliability with the higher output, internal components have been strengthened with a stronger piston pin, larger connecting rod, larger rod journal and redesigned oil control ring. Most air-cooled products (including chillers, rooftop units, and condensing units) use DX evaporators. Most DX systems allow oil to travel through the refrigeration circuit and back to the compressor oil sump. Great care must be taken during design to provide oil return, particularly at part load, when refrigerant flow rates are reduced.Water-cooled chillers often use flooded evaporators. In a flooded evaporator, even small amounts of oil can coat evaporator tubes and significantly diminish chiller performance. This can lead to an elaborate oil-recovery system. Magnetic bearings eliminate the need for these systems and oil management in general. In fact, the only required regular maintenance of the compressor is the quarterly tightening of the terminal screws, the annual blowing off of dust and cleaning of the boards, and the changing of the capacitors every five years. Complete service agreements and extended maintenance contracts can be provided by the manufacturer. When we last looked at mini-backhoe loaders several years ago, the market for these machines was under 4000 units annually, but growing. Today, suppliers are selling over 6000 units and the demand keeps rolling along. The companies involved in mini-backhoes include Terramite, Allmand Brothers, Dig-It, EarthForce, Ingersoll Equipment, Kubota and Waldon. Two companies - Lely, which sold Kioti backhoes and K-D Manitou, the French manufacturer- dropped out of the market in 1999. Terramite is the recognized leader in this product and is the largest producer in the world. The company, founded in 1965, has been a family-owned, global business since its beginning. The Charleston, W.Va., company offers three models - the T5C, T5D and T6. The T5C has been around for 10 years, the T6 was introduced in 1997 and the T5D was just added in 1999. Digging depth on the smaller models is about 8 ft., while the larger T6 has a dig depth of 10 ft.
