Check hereRenting the augerYou may not have many auger choices at smaller rental stores, but if you go to a larger outlet or a home center that rents power tools, you''ll have to choose between a two- or one-person (see p. 70) power auger head, as well as select the correctly sized auger itself. Auger drills are interchangeable and come in 4-, 6-, 8- or 12-in. diameters. The one to choose depends on the type of posts you''re installing. Remember, the larger the diameter, the tougher it is to handle the machine. If you''re pouring 12-in. footings for a deck, you''ll obviously need the 12-in. auger (Photo 3), but for 4x4 posts, pick up an 8-in. auger. You''ll be able to get away with a 6-in. auger for steel fence posts. Keep in mind that you''ll need a larger hole (and a larger auger) if you''ll be filling around the post with concrete. The 4-in. auger will work for any small post that doesn''t need concrete poured around it. I use the 12-in. auger for all but the smallest posts because the extra space allows me to move the post around for exact placement. Feedstuffs fixProducers putting up hay and handling feedstuffs often cite a particular machine as a key to their success.Bob Minner, Fallon, Nevada, depends on quality baling equipment for commercial hay operation. "You have to keep up with changes in the machinery," Minner says. And quality equipment is key to producing dairy-quality hay for his customers, he says. Good dairy test hay will bring $110 to $115, and he has received up to $117 a ton for some.Minner shifted from small squares to big square bales eight years ago to meet the demand of local dairy operations. He operates a Hesston 8450 self-propelled windrower and a Hesston 4910 baler to cover about 6,000 acres a season. He double-rakes with a rotary machine for bigger windrows and to better dry the hay. The bales, measuring 8 feet long and weighing 1,750 to 2,300 pounds, are then picked up with a tractor-pulled bale wagon that hauls four bales at a time. The leading suppliers of the standard machines have had to make some major adjustments in production levels, and two companies (JCB in the United Kingdom and Komatsu, with production facilities in Italy) have started manufacturing their products in North America to offset rising costs firm producing machines overseas and importing them to the domestic market. JCB has a new manufacturing facility in Pooler, Ga. Komatsu has opened a new facility for utility vehicle assembly and production in Newbury, S.C. Back in 1998, only three companies made their machines in North America. Today, six out of seven companies are sourcing machines from domestic manufacturing sites.
